Post Halloween Tales: Excuse me, is the Dean around?

I had to wait a few days till I could post this.

*disclaimer: I merely heard this story from my Brother and the details may or may not be true, but if you happen to be a student of this certain school the it's most likely that you may have heard of this story and may confirm it to be true.

*to avoid defamation of the school's name and the people behind this we will use substitute names.

One supposedly ordinary day the students of Cebu Medical Academy were having the educational time of their lives. Then suddenly the Chairman of the Anatomy Department: Dr. Zheng, was going room to room to inform students of a 12:30pm mass in the Academy Chapel. The mass was intended for the cadavers of the academy.

The students were curious about why a mass was needed as soon as possible when they usually pray for the cadavers only before the dissection. This is what supposedly happened:

Around 6 am in the morning a certain person went to the administration to ask for the Dean of Medicine. The protocol was to ask the person for his name so that they could inform the Dean of Medicine. The Dean was not around at that time so they were asked to leave their names. They were supposedly "students" in casual attire and one was asked to leave his name.

The name seemed familiar and then it was checked. The name was one that came from the Cadavers.

Could this be a prank? The file for the list of Cadaver names is locked and confidential.
Could it have been a CMA student? The person who received the name could not recall the faces.
Note: Some spirits don't have recognizable faces.

Was this a joke? It must have been a really good one to make an administration as serious and professional as CMA to call for a mass ASAP.

Where is this CMA and who are these Cadavers? Maybe if you open your ears and try to ask the right people, you just might get the real deal...

I guess this year's intrams has been the best one I've ever experienced so far. The preparations were wonderful and I have to give a nice pat in the back to all the colleges for exerting effort in all the events. Even at the start of the Intrams week I could already feel the competitive spirit rising to a crescendo.

The opening started with a mass to bless the whole week of games and sportsmanship and then there was the parade of colleges into the gymnasium.

Of course with the large number of people present in the gymnasium this would be a very a good business opportunity for some students. Ahem ahem.

And like any intramurals in Velez College, you can see the hundreds of students armed with their college color, cellphones, extra cash for spending around Laags, and most importantly: THE ATTENDANCE SHEET. ~~Cursed by a cruel fate of three games per day~~ As the intrams is still part of a normal school day, attendance is checked and you know it's every after the game that the teachers ~~run away to seek refuge from a mob of students~~ try to avoid the large number of students so it will happen that one or two teachers ~~get trapped in the huge wave of students~~ stay behind to sign the attendance sheets.

Velez College Intramurals 2010, officially open!

No opening like this will be complete without the Torch being carried around by the team captains of the different colleges. For CAS we had Francis Veloso, BSMT we had Mike Locson, for BSN we had Ralph Puentespina and for PT/OT we had Ralph Alo.

And lastly the teachers who just wanna have fun:

The candidates for the Mr. and Ms. Intramurals proved to be quite competitive as the judges seemed to have had a hard time in working out who will be the winner for this year. Fortunately they came to a conclusion and the College of Physical and Occupational Therapy won the title for Mr. and Ms. Intramurals 2010. They will represent Cebu Velez College in the CESAFI competition.
I guess this deserves a separate post so please do watch out for the next post.

Bio Blackout Bash 2010

The black and beautiful second years

Last July 31, 2010 the Velez College Students' Biological Association had their first ever Bio Blackout Bash in Kul Kitchen at The Strip.

Dressed in the most awesome black outfits the Biology Students forgot about everything from toads, skulls, exams and just relaxed and had fun. Though the group is considered a minority of the College however that does not stop them from standing up and being proud of their college.

Students started pouring in the venue and everyone couldn't miss the opportunity to once again, take pictures of self. With the theme to be black and with the goal to dress to impress the students then admired themselves *ahem* and their fellow classmates.

Once everyone was settled down the food started coming in. Carbonara Fettucini, Mushroomed beef, creamed ribs, fried squiders, and roasted chicken; the thought of the food served that night still makes me undergo secretion of salivary amylase from the salivary glands.

Of course after everyone had their fill the activities and program begun. Despite the simultaneous occurrence of the CESAFI meeting our own Dean herself made effort to show up for a very important part of the night. The Dean lead the induction of officers for the School year 2010-2011 and the new name of the student's organization was introduced as: Velez College Students' Biological Association.

After the induction there was a series of trivia questions as chocolates were at stake. :P The games continued with a Hep hep hooray competition led by our lovely Lyn Evasco. Kudos to Kevin for a very enthusiastic fight for the win!

The finale for the blackout bash involved the students having to dress to impress. There was a catwalk where cash prize was ready for the most impressively dressed. After all, Biology students do have the brains, beauty and brawn :P

With the final decision left to the faculty, we finally came up with our winners: Beauty and Pierre.

That night was a memorable night for the Biology students as they gathered as one group under one roof. Of course the whole thing won't be complete without the family pictures right? :P

Velez College and CIM Firedrill

Cebu Velez College along with Cebu Institute of Medicine had their fire drill during a weekend. Through the efforts of Engr. Jocelyn Rosefilia Z. Gonzales MAST, our Dean of the College of arts and Sciences, we were able to have the opportunity to FINALLY have a successful fire drill and also an earthquake drill.

The students were carefully briefed along with all the different departments of Cebu Velez College. The actual Fire drill started at exactly 9am. It was interesting to see everything nicely prepared. I remembered a fire drill in my previous school where we used Firecrackers to smoke the place up (by smoke I mean fill the place up with smoke and not burn the place down). This time Velez College used a nice smelling Incense with teachers to professionally handle the chemical reactions undergoing in the process of formation of smoke ;) (sir, mam, pls don't ask me for the chemical formula :P)

It was nice to note that all the students were actually participating when the actual drill occurred. Then everyone in an organized manner exited and resumed to their positions. They even had student volunteers to handle the injured people. (Though I still find it ironic to drag injured people away from the hospital rather than towards it. Then again the place is "supposedly" burning right?)

The students along with some of the staff were able to have the opportunity to try out the fire extinguisher. Wish I was able to try that out :D Check out the awesome pics below:

Being Filipino as we are we can't miss out the opportunity to camwhore as in ANY situation. One history teacher once said that it's only Filipinos who can smile during a state of crisis to be part of a picture they'll probably never see. Well luckily for the subjects I took, they can finally see the pictures below. Sorry for the delay in posting due to midterms and exams.

Once again I would like to forward my congratulations to Dean and everyone else who made this whole drill successful. Congratulations! *with matching outstretched arms and enthusiastic face*

The much awaited May 10 Elections are here and people have been lining up since 6AM to cast their votes. Remember that YOUR VOTE COUNTS. Don't vote just because of the advertisements & what the media's trying to potray about these candidates. We will never know the real truth because in reality, A LOT of people are biased. Political bashing and weighing down of other candidates is very unsportsman like and we should not sink to their level. Don't judge other people because of their candidates, it's their decision and your making one too.

Doesn't it just feel good to be at home?
At your hometown or just at home in Cebu?
No need to worry about getting up early in the morning only to find yourself in
traffic & finding yourself late again for the nth time?
Or having to worry about where to eat lunch at peak hour
Or better yet not having homework, no exams, no long hours of sitting down
listening to lectures and your butt sore afterwards??

Ahhh... Yes, FINALLY. The end of another semester & the end of a college life -
for some of us that is.

Exams now seem like a myth. Papers have been passed, requirements finished, endless sleepless nights of burning our eyebrows till we have nothing left - DONE! The stress is over!

Our time for some R&R is long overdue. It maybe the end of another school year - and a new chapter well on it's way. Be it summer class or board exams, We still need to get as much R&R before Pandora's box comes open again. As the saying goes - " STUDY HARD - PARTY HARDER!"

Velez College Supreme Students Council Elections 2010

Velez College SSC Election

The day of elections has arrived. With everyone feeling 'political' especially with the fact that our National Elections is also coming this May.

This is actually a first in the Cebu Velez College to have the Supreme Student Council elections at the end of the second semester. The original constitution stated that the election of new officers would be held on the second half of the first semester.

Chao Menchavez, the SSC 2009-2010 president, decided to have the constitution changed and have the elections on the end of the semester because this would give a more time for the new officers to work on projects over the summer. This is one really intelligent move of Chao which I believe brings the SSC of Velez College to a whole new level. With the 5 months reign of the SSC 2009-2010 I say they have done a marvelous job. I will be making a review on their visible accomplishments and do wait for an exclusive interview with Chao Menchavez. (Showbiz nao na!)

For this year we actually had two sets of parties: the A.F.T.E.R (A fearless transformation for Equality and Reformation) Party and the E.Y.E.S (Empowering Youth and Excellence through service).

The AFTER Party composes of Sherry Mae Mondido for president, Dexter Lu for Vice-president Internal, Vera Joy Bajarias for Vice-President External, Regina Anisha Cuenca for Secretary, Walter Ian Lim for Treasurer, and Stephanie Anne Tan for Auditor.

The EYES party composes of Angeli Neri for President, Karen Abrenica for Vice-president internal, Audrey Mendoza for Vice-president external, Laurice Homecillo for Secretary, Demimae Yu for Treasurer, and Raye Lim for Auditor.

If one may notice the AFTER party is dominantly composed of Med-tech students while the EYES party is dominantly composed of Nursing Students. I'm guessing this is another Medtech v.S. Nursing war again as these two colleges have the largest population.

However, I would like to remind my fellow Velezians that Cebu Velez College is not about who is better than who. The whol purpose of the SSC is to unite the students in a pathway for success and not to wave the positions as trophies of dominance.

And so I wish good luck to the candidates for SSC officers for 2010-11. My fellow velezians, I hope you voted wisely.

Velez College Intramurals 2009 Pop Jazz Competition PT/OT

Is this year's theme for Pop Jazz wild and scary? First we had the wild animals/monters for the Nursing, next we have Freaky Gothic Carnival for the Medtechs, and now Dancing zombies for PT/OT?

Their theme was quite amusing really. You got the whole concept of Zombie from MJ's Thriller while you have the dead concept from the dying stars of today. Or maybe everything was just inspired from Michael Jackson.

Their dance was impressive. Nice choreography, great costumes, but need more practise. The only thing I realized after watching the video the third time is that they have a tendency to keep dropping and dropping a lot. This is probably why the judges decided to choose nursing. But I love the last part when a hand stuck out in the middle of the pile of bodies.

This year, looks like the Medical Technology department put some investment into this dance judging by their pretty costumes and a handful of props. I have to say they did have an interesting theme with the whole concept of "Freaky Gothic Carnival". If I didn't take shots during the dance I would've chased the doves that they freed. hihihihi. Bring em home and breed!

Anyway, I was expecting more because the intro part of the dance was very impressive, but later on I didn't seem to see much anymore. Well, we have to admit. The medical Technology students are a busy lot. But kudos to their costume and entrance.

The college of Nursing in Cebu Velez College proudly presents their Velez College Nursing Pop Jazz for Intramurals 2009.

The choreography was as expected, beautiful. The interpretation of a wild animals coming forth from within brought about the adrenalin in many of the students as they join in the spirit of sportsmanship and competitiveness.

One of the students even commented, "It was all so well danced that when the dancers broke of from their cage it actually scared me a bit."

And their wonderful performance made them the Winners for the Pop Jazz Competition in Velez College.

Medical Technology Acquaintance Party 2009

I was gonna take a picture of the Medtech Acquaintance party set up.. but...

On the night of July 17, 600 (and a little more) students from the department of Medical Technology alonith few of our teachers and medical technologists, gathered in one room to enjoy a night of fun and a temporary freedom from the bonds of examination. That marked the largest Medtech Acquaintance party I have ever seen.

The evening was wonderful filled with surprises. I have to say, although it wasn't a perfect party, it was far better than any Christmas party or acquaintance party that I've experienced before. I would like to extend my congratulations to the First years and second years who exerted a lot of effort in making their presentations and also to the Medical Technology Interns who showed to us that being Medtech isn't just books and microscopes.

The presentation from the first years was truly, erm, liberating and democratic, showing the free spirit of the freshmen.. They were truly liberated and free in their expression. (did I just say free and liberated twice?)

Anyway, the party ended quite early at around 10 pm, but that did not stop the Medtech Interns to grab the opportunity to dance the night away. Good luck to those who were to have their 24 hour duty the next day.

And so the brief moment that we were relinquished from our exams was over as the dark painful reality pierced our souls once more... Exams next week.

Good luck to the first years in whatever they are experiencing now, like the Q1 andQ2, and ouch on the Q3; to the second years, welcome to the world of Ana-phy. To the 3rd years, Examination Buffet!!!! And to the Medical Technology Interns... no comment..(maypa moh, wala nay tuon)

Back to School in Cebu Velez College

Once more the sun has risen to welcome a new day. But this was not just any day. This was the day which some happily welcomed while some horribly dreaded. This was the first day for Cebu Velez College.
And so the first day came. A lot of us from the higher years felt that the summer was too short and we needed an extension (ahem, calling AH1N1...), while the freshmen were excited for the first day of school.

New friends.
New faces.
New environment.
New chix(tsk tsk tsk...)
New teachers
and new chance to prove yourself.

Those are the new things one experiences as a freshmen.

I was once a freshmen myself and I totally understand how it feels. Correct me if I am wrong but these are the common few that one can observe amongst freshmen.

1.The Casual attire that everyone puts so much effort to give a good first impression
(I saw one wearing a suit, and another wearing a dress)
2.People will crowd in one spot as if they were playing "the boat is sinking"
3.You can identify different schools according to what group you are in.
(this year I see a lot of hearters)
4.There are some who wear uniform in the first day and realize that you don't have to so they change the next day.
5.Freshmen are so eager to greet their friends from the higher years and they feel good that they see familiar faces.
6.Freshmen are still afraid to move around for fear of being noticed in a bad way
7.Freshmen are always too early for class (LOL)
8.The Freshmen Classes are always whole. They move together in one giant wave
9.Freshmen eat in expensive places like Orange Brutus, McDo, Jollibee, and the like, while fearing the small canteens not knowing what ever microorganism inhabits these places.
10.Freshmen are quick to buy all the notes and textbooks provided.

Aside from the Top 10 things we noticed about freshies, we also have first week of school lines. These are things we hear from different students when we pass by them:

"Excuse me, aha na ang room TBA?"-Freshie

"Muskwela pa ko diri? Mura man ni ug ambot."-Freshie

"Hala, oiz, kita ka ato niya, wafu siya!"-old student stalking a new one

"Unsa man ni si Mr. ___, Lisod ni siya?"

"Sus, kakapoy ba gud, walay teacher mutungha."

And those are but a few things we hear around the campus.

Once again, I would personally like to welcome all the Feshmen into Cebu Velez College. I tell you, if you are looking forward to be top of the line medical professionals then you've come to the right college. Velez College offers only the best in education and it does not keep with them students only mediocre performance.

Freshmen, watch out. Get ready for something challenging and new.
Fellow Velezians of the higher years; We've survived the past year, and surviving this year we shall do once more.

To all Velezians, good luck.

And also to the faculty that will be handling the massive 10 sections for the Department of Medical Technology (first year only).... well, uhmm, hope you survive too ;)

Velez College Fine Dining 2009

One of the requirements for our PE4 subject, we were told to have a fine dining as a final activity and was regarded as a final exam. Of course we were informed to dress up in Sunday's best.. Well, as expected, not everyone had a unified idea of what is Sunday's best.

The program was expected to start at 6pm, but knowing the Velezians, we all have busy lives and always put studies first. So most of the students arrived around 7:30 pm and the program started around 7:50pm.

There was still a talk from a teacher from USC, and she "educated" us on the ways of "fine dining". But personally, I observed that the set up wasn't really what you can call fine dining... Only two tables actually had a decent set of utensils and flatware. All the rest we merely had this:

Anyway, the talk started around 8pm and the students were mad hungry.. I pity the teacher since no one was listening to her. Everyone just wanted to eat. I wanted to eat! I was freaking hungry! I didn't even have lunch.

They started serving the food and we had the following:

If you notice I no longer placed the soup picture.. I was so hungry that I just digged in and forgot to take a shot.

I was quite disappointed with the Coke, I mean how can Coke be bad right? Well, they diluted it and made it lose its carbonated feel to the point that I felt like I was drinking some kind of weird juice.

But enough about the bad part, what I enjoyed was the whole letting lose for awhile, and enjoying the presence of friends and of course dressing up. You don't get to dress up everyday now do you? I actually wore gel that day!

So basically, I did enjoy the night (just not the food and location). It was a great way for us to have a feel of what seemed like "prom". Well, maybe 1/4 of what prom would have been. But then again. It was an experience, and like all experience whether good or bad, should be embraced and something should be learned from it....

(seriously now, I am ranting... I have a Bead stitch project for tomorrow, a scrapbook not even started, and a Chem Lab Moving exam, so please bear with my pathetic content for this blog post.)

Velez College, Talk on Bioethics

Last saturday, it was my privilege to have been invited to a Talk in Bioethics in the United States. At first, I was merely informed that the talk was about health care in the US setting. Little did I know that it actuallty covered greater details.

Our speaker, Atty. Michael Joseph Kotarski, is a lawyer from Michigan. He came to talk to us of the legal issues involved when working in the US. He started his talk by telling us of the major advantages of Filipino Health workers. He mentioned that Filipinos were pretty experienced when it came to hands on training. However, there is one thing that we needed to know that we may not neccesarily be informed about already. That is the concept of Patient Needs.

Patient Needs is the major destination for Health care in the US. This generally talks about the decisions revolving around ethics. He also discussed another important matter involving the need for documenting and recording our services rendered to the patient.

It made me proud that he informed the audience that the Roman Catholic Church has the highest ethical standard in the US. This means that the final decisions of what is right in terms of ethics, is done by the Church.

Atty. Michael made mention of three important powers of attorney when it came to the decision making part of the patient.
1.DPOA (durable power of Attorney) on Money Matters
2.DPOA on Medical Matters
3.PAD (Patient advocate Designation)

The first two powers are rather self explanatory, while the third power focused on the medical designation of the patient (especially comatose patients) which will include the termination of a medical treatment. (pulling the plug)

If there is no DPOA and etc. have two options as assigned by the court.
a.Conservatorship- someone aside from the court as requested by the hospital to make credible decisions for the patient who is unable to make a decision.
b.Guardianship- a legal guardian of the patient

Apart from all those things, I also learned a new word.
We all know what a hospital is, and what hospitalize, hospitable, or hospitalization are.

According to Atty. Michael, they are the ones assigned for the PAD in the three powers of attorney.

Another noteworthy mention of the speaker was that Filipinos have a way of handling life and death(mostly death) matters that patients in the US feel more understood when Filipinos announce their situations.

Oh, and for the curious ones, Atty. Michael share that the average income for the nurses abroad is 25$ an hour, meaning for every hour that you are working, you get 1200 php. Wow!
While private nurses earn $6000 per month which is equivalent to 288000 php. Double wow.

The last thing I was able to hear from Atty. Michael was him mentioning Filipinos being too submissive.
